What should I major in?

Question by : What should I major in?
I’m finishing my senior year in high school, and don’t exactly know what I want to major in. I have been tossing around the idea of becoming a dentist which I actually really want to do, but I have doubts if I am smart enough. I have a 3.3 gpa and a 1600 sat. I went up to pre calc in high school. How hard is it to become a dentist? Do to need to be extremely smart? Oh and im going to the university of Utah so do they have a good program? What should I major in to become a dentist?

Best answer:

Answer by Ashley
If you really want to be a dentist, I don’t think you should let doubts of being smart enough stop you from doing it. You’ll regret it if you don’t do what you really wanted to do later in life and you are stuck with a job that you hate. If you really apply yourself, I think you can do it. I wouldn’t go in thinking it is going to be easy though. It’s going to be tough…really tough. LOTS of studying…..but after you get through it you’re sitting on easy street. If you have trouble with the courses, you can always get tutors and you will have classmates that can help you. :) Good luck with everything!

Check out this link to NYU School of Dentistry program for foreign students who have a dental degree from another country: http://www.nyu.edu/dental/academicprograms/ddsap/index.html

Based on what I read it seems that you would need to go through an additional 3 years of training. NYU dental school can also be quite expensive. Other schools may also have this same option. Good luck.

Can I have a tooth removed under sedation?

Question by Natalie W: Can I have a tooth removed under sedation?
I have had my wisdom tooth removed and only had an injection and had no problems. Now I have been the dentist to have a different tooth removed and the pain was so unbearable I had to ask the dentist to stop. She asked me to come back next week to try again. The pain was so bad I am terrified of trying again. Would I be able to be sedated to have this removed?

Best answer:

Answer by Sheri Green
as long as your doctor says your can handle being sedated, some people are allergic, i have to be sedated when getting my teeth pulled otherwise i have a panic attack, literally. they give u an ivy which is only a poke in the arm, which is less painful than a shot in the mouth. then they give you the anesthetic, the next thing u know your waking up groggy and the tooth is gone. but u should ask your doctor first just incase your allergic or have heart problems. some dentist also have nitrios gas (spelled wrong) its suppose to help u relax.

Q&A: How does the cold test given by your dentist work?

Question by ricky: How does the cold test given by your dentist work?
I recently got headbutted in the mouth playing football and knocked a few of my teeth out of place. My dentist placed stints in my teeth to hold them in place after he straightened them. 2 days later he gave me a cold test to check if any of my teeth that got hit were dead. The results of the test showed that 3 of my teeth were 100 percent dead. How did he know that using the cold test?

Best answer:

Answer by Amanda Panda Bear
If the teeth were alive, you would have felt the intense coldness. That’s how they check for living nerves in teeth.

Don’t worry, just because they are dead doesn’t mean they are no good for saving, they will just need a root canal later, probably. They may last with that for years! Good luck keeping the rest of your teeth!

Q&A: How much does it cost to have a dentist whiten your teeth?

Question by Lexi: How much does it cost to have a dentist whiten your teeth?
How much does teeth-whitening cost through a dentist?
Will any insurance cover the procedure?
Is it safe?
What are some easy (fool-proof) alternatives and how much do they cost?

Best answer:

Answer by Ray <3
I got quoted around 200 dollars but there are different procedures depending on the type of staining, the type of treatment they use, where you live, etc.
Insurance will NOT cover it because it is a cosmetic procedure.
Safe… ehhh some say it is, some say it isn’t, generally yes if you get it done at the dentist, but it can weaken your enamel.
Mix baking soda with peroxide.. You can get a small box of baking soda for under a dollar and a small bottle of hydrogen peroxide for the same. Mix it into a paste (or just dip your brush in the peroxide and then in the baking soda ) and brush with it. DONT swallow it, then brush your teeth normally. It won’t make your teeth sensitive like some other whiteners, and it’s cheap, but don’t do it more than once or twice a week (don’t do it every day) as it really just removes stains and once they’re gone, they’re gone, you can’t really get much whiter.

Remember teeth aren’t naturally white, they’re off white, so you can’t really get them WHITE without damaging them. People you see with super white teeth… They’re teeth are actually very unhealthy. Good luck!

Q&A: What is the easiest way to become a dentist?

Question by Ashi-mashi: What is the easiest way to become a dentist?
In what country? How much does it cost? Are student loans available for it?

And also What is the Best Dentistry Degree and where can you get it from?

And is studying to become a dentist worth it? Does it pay enough?

Best answer:

Answer by Voltron
a lot of questions ther. In the US student loans are available for dentsal school, no school is really any better than any other they are all good. Price can range depending on whether its in state tuition or not but for most its oon the pricey side. There are two dental degrees a DDS and a DMD they are equivalent. I like dentistry so for me it was worth it. as for pay I work only 4 days a week 6 hour on those days and I travel on weekends, my weekends start thur night and end sundday night :) (it pays well) /if you are interested in dentistry pursuit it. Study hard and do well on your DAT. FOr me theDAt carried a lot of weight but I study about a year for it before taking it.

Do orthodontist take before and after pictures?

Question by Rick: Do orthodontist take before and after pictures?
I recently got braces as an adult. Before the procedure began, the orthodontist took before and after pictures. This orthodontist took a picture of me while I was fully standing facing him and one picture of my side view fully standing. He then took pictures of my inner mouth when I was sitting. Is this a normal procedure? I was really weirded out by this.
My orthodontist said this was normal and for legal documentation.

Best answer:

Answer by Steph
my orthodontist took pictures of my teeth from the front and side view..but i dont recall taking pictures inside of my mouth. but i think they keep it on file so they can take pictures of ur teeth after u get ur braces off so u can see the improvement
